It is the most-watched commercial station in The Netherlands in Europe. It is popular especially for those aged between 20 and 49. RTL 4 is a general entertainment channel with infotainmenttelevision dramatalk showsgame showsnews and talent shows.

RTL4 is a subsidiary of RTL Group

This channel was originally launched on the Astra 1A satellite as RTL Véronique on the 2nd of October 1989. It is all owned by RTL Nederland, which is a subsidiary of RTL Group that own’s the German RTL channels too.

Back in the days, RTL4 was the only one. But today the station has three sister TV channels: RTL 5, RTL 7 and RTL 8, and four thematic TV channels: RTL Z, RTL Lounge, RTL Crime, and RTL Telekids.

Officially RTL 4 – along with RTL 5RTL 7 and RTL 8 – is headquartered in Hilversum, broadcasting under a Luxembourg TV license. Free to Air segments for Satellite Television viewers

My experience with RTL4 goes back to 1990 when I saw this tv channel for the first time. It was an interesting channel that had some programs decrypted while others needed a decoder that I didn’t have. Especially in the mornings when they mixed news and kids programs. Then their news was broadcasted for free, while Yoggi Bear was decrypted.

RTL4 managed to gain marked and popularity by doing this. They did so to get higher income tricking the Dutch people. Private broadcasters were not allowed in the Netherlands until 1992. So, RTL4 broadcasted from Luxembourg.

The encryption system employed by both RTL 4 and 5 analogue services whilst on the Astra 1A and 1C satellites was Luxcrypt. This standard was employed in order to protect the distribution rights sold by foreign studios to RTL.
